What Does A Sub Woofer Do In A Car Stereo?

What Is A Subwoofer

A subwoofer is not an ordinary speaker but it is unique in the way that it functions. A subwoofer is designed to create low-frequency sounds that result in better and cleaner sounding bass.

A standard speaker you cannot accomplish this. Subwoofers do not work alone but they work as a team with other speakers. If a car stereo system does not have subwoofers then the driver will not be able to hear deep bass kicks and drum beats clearly.

The deep bass kicks and the drum beats would sound muffled and possibly deliver a poor listening experience. The only things that you can hear clearly when you do not have subwoofers as a part of your car stereo system is the vocal melodies and guitar solos.

When it comes to subwoofers sometimes the reputation that the speakers have can be negative. Here are a few of the most common stereotypes that are associated with subwoofers.

Subwoofers are known for having a bass that is so strong that is sets off car alarms, annoys individuals in the vehicles next to them, and can get the driver of the vehicle ticketed by the police for a noise ordinance. A subwoofer in relation to a car stereo is one of the most vital parts of the car stereo system that brings great quality sounding music into the vehicle.

How Does A Subwoofer Produce Sound

All speakers including subwoofers create sound by moving air. What makes the sound that a subwoofer produces unique and able to generate low bass frequencies is the massive cone environment inside of the speaker

A regular speaker cannot generate low bass frequencies because the power needed to generate this deep bass is too demanding for a regular car speaker. If a driver cranks up the bass level on their regular car speakers the sound will be very low quality.

What Are Passive And Powered Subwoofers

When it comes to subwoofers the sound quality depends on the power supply. Most subwoofers have built-in amplifiers but some have to be plugged into a separate amplifier.

The subwoofers with the built-in amplifiers are called powered subwoofers. The subwoofers with the amplifiers that have to be plugged into the subwoofer are called passive subwoofers.

When it comes to the functionality of the powered subwoofer it allows the user to adjust the volume base when they want to filter out any unwanted frequencies.

The passive subwoofer gives the user more flexibility when it comes to the amount of power that they choose to use. The bottom line is that the subwoofer is the key to attaining good bass and a clear sounding car stereo system.
